In Verona, Rivera called “magnificent” Bonsignori’s
Madonna
, steeped in Mantegna’s spirit. In Rivera’s sketch,
the infant Christ, sterner than in Bonsignori’s painting, lies
forlornly on the slablike cube of cubism on the esthetic rack
of scientific perspective.
