As part of the Archives of American Art’s oral history program, Mary-Anne Martin was interviewed by James McElhinney in July of 2009 about her remarkable career promoting Latin American art. This entry in the Archives’ catalogue offers a rich window into the history of this field and Martin’s role in transforming the market for Latin American art in the United States. The interview discussions include Martin’s interest in art history, her role at Sotheby’s that led to her creation of the Mexican and Latin American department, the founding of her gallery, and her observations about the ensuing rise of the market and the scholarly study of this field. While the recorded interview is only accessible through contacting the Archives, a transcript of this recording is now available online on the Smithsonian’s website.
